Before 1901 there were four bells in the tower. There is no record of these weights of the bells, but from the recorded diameters, we can deduce that they were probably between 4 and 7 cwt.
1 - Cast by Thomas Eayre I of Kettering , 1754 27" diameter 2 - Cast by George Oldfield of Nottingham, 1656 29" diameter 3 - Cast in 1600 (Founder unknown) 1600 31" diameter 4 - Cast in Nottingham, probably Oldfield, c1600 34" diameter In 1901, the four old bells were removed and replaced with a new ring ring of six bells (tenor 12-3-15), cast by Taylor's of Loughborough - the bell metal from the old four bells was used to cast one of the new bells (the present 5th bell). Some of the inscriptions from the old bells were reproduced on the new bells. |
At the time, the bells were rung from the ground floor, but in 1980, a new floor was built, and the ringing chamber was moved upstairs (but only a very short flight of 10 steps). In 1988, two trebles, cast by Eijsbout's of Asten (Netherlands), were added by Eayre & Smith.
The bells are hung on two levels: bells 1,2 and 4 are on the top level (shown here), with the others underneath

The fifth was cast from the metal from the old ring of four bells. Although the bells are nominally in the key of G, they are actually nearly quarter of a tone above G. In some texts the key is quoted as Ab. The treble bell (number 1; shown left) is known as the Children's Bell, and was paid for by donations given by families in thanks for, and in memory of children. The band round the top of the bell depicts children at play. |
